Starting March 1, 2024, more people in Ontario can get help with their electricity bills thanks to changes in the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP). This program gives monthly money back to help cover electricity costs.
Now, families and individuals who make a bit more money can also qualify for this help — up to 35% more income is allowed. This means around 100,000 more homes across Ontario can get this benefit.
The OESP gives money back each month to help lower-income homes with their electricity bills. How much money you get back depends on how much money your household makes and how many people live in your home. Most people will get between $35 and $75 back each month. Some groups, like Indigenous people, those using a lot of electricity for heating or medical devices, might get even more money back.
If you’re already getting help from the OESP, you might be able to get more money because of these changes. If you think you now qualify for this program or could get more benefits, you should contact Empower Simcoe’s Regional Housing Support Services for more information.
You can call them at (705) 739-0485 or email housingcalls@empowersimcoe.ca to ask about the program or see if you can get more help.
