Honouring Indigenous History Month at Empower Simcoe

June highlights both Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), recognizing the significance of Indigenous history, heritage, resilience, and the diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across our nation.

Angelia Brooks, Empower Simcoe’s Indigenous Coordinator, recently joined the Community Support Services Barrie team meeting, and the Empower Simcoe Board of Directors and Foundation Board meeting to discuss our agency’s Land Acknowledgment statement. Those in attendance participated in a smudging circle led by Angelia, who explained the purpose of our agency’s Land Acknowledgment statement and provided information on Indigenous history and customs related to the land that Empower Simcoe is situated on.  Additionally, she discussed how we can adapt the Land Acknowledgment for our Empower Simcoe teams.

Chi-Mii’gwetch, Angelia, for sharing your valuable insight, as well as the opportunity through the smudging ceremony to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit to promote balance and harmony.
