Empowering Others, at Home and Beyond: Gladys Okoli’s Inspiring Journey

From Nigeria to Simcoe County, Gladys brings a legacy of kindness, advocacy, and community impact—both through her work at Empower Simcoe and her vision for a brighter future.

Gladys Okoli, an Empower Simcoe Accommodations Support Worker, is deeply committed to giving back to her community. As a charter member of her Rotary Club in Nigeria, Gladys was excited to join the Rotary Club of Barrie when she relocated to Simcoe County.

She thoughtfully considered how she could contribute meaningfully to her new community, saying, “Besides my work at Empower Simcoe, I asked myself how I could make a difference.”

Motivated by the inspiring legacy of her late mother, who established a support program for widows in Nigeria that provided tuition assistance and essential groceries for families, Gladys eagerly proposed a similar initiative to her Rotary Club in Barrie. “It’s an idea that’s cooking,” she laughs. “We’re still adding the spices. It’s not finished yet, but I can’t wait to share it with Empower Simcoe and the community.”

Her deep love for family also fuels Gladys’ passion for her career in developmental services.

“My late brother was diagnosed with autism,” she shares. “His journey inspired me to become a Support Professional, and I truly love what I do.” When asked what she finds most fulfilling about her role, she answers with a warm smile, “It’s listening to the dreams, wishes, hopes, and goals of the people I support. That’s my greatest joy.”

Our heartfelt gratitude, Gladys. Your amazing impact on the people and families you serve, as well as your community, is truly inspiring!
