Empower Simcoe Partners with United Way Simcoe Muskoka to Launch Home Relief Bank

Empower Simcoe’s Regional Housing Support Services is proud to partner with United Way Simcoe Muskoka on an innovative new initiative to address the growing housing crisis in our communities. The Home Relief Bank, a pilot program launching this fall, offers interest-free loans and individualized support services to individuals and families at risk of eviction or foreclosure.

With the cost of living rising and affordable housing increasingly out of reach, many across Simcoe County and Muskoka are facing mounting pressure to maintain housing stability. According to the 2021 census, over 131,000 people in our region live in unaffordable housing. For some, a short-term crisis—such as job loss, health challenges, or the breakdown of a relationship—can be enough to put them on the brink of losing their home.

“The Home Relief Bank is a direct response to the growing housing crisis in our region,” says Brian Shelley, Chief Executive and Philanthropy Officer at United Way Simcoe Muskoka. “It’s rooted in our commitment to strengthen communities through innovative partnerships and targeted funding.”

What makes this initiative unique is its holistic approach. Alongside financial relief, individuals will be connected to personalized services that help build long-term resiliency and housing stability. Funds repaid into the program are reinvested, creating a powerful cycle of support and the opportunity for recipients to one day “pay it forward.”

“This is more than a financial safety net,” adds Sharon McCormick, United Way’s Chief Administrative Officer. “It’s about helping people navigate challenging times while building a sustainable system of community care.”

The Home Relief Bank will be evaluated over a three-year pilot period, with the goal of expanding its reach throughout Simcoe County, the District of Muskoka, and the Town of The Blue Mountains.

Empower Simcoe is committed to helping individuals thrive in their communities, and we are honoured to be part of this important and forward-thinking initiative.
